York Timbers Agricultural Division, has an exciting opportunity available for a Research and Development Officer with experience in pome fruit (preferably apples). The position will be based at Stadsrivier Valley, situated in the Nelspruit region. This position will report directly to the General Manager. Responsibilities will include (but not limited to): • Oversee and manage the implementation of the Burgers Dam Apple Trial Block; • Manage existing trial blocks: Citrus Trial on Stadsrivier, Macadamia Trial on Longridge; • Maintenance - weeding and pruning of trees; • Monitor for pests and disease and the management thereof; • Maintain monitoring record of pest and disease and the development of the population; • Write an annual report on the Trial blocks as well as any other trials; • Keep abreast with the new varieties of Pome Fruit, Citrus, Avocados and Macadamias; • Establish new trial blocks as and when required; • Network with the main IP owners for new varieties; • Benchmark York’s production costs, production volumes; • Compile an annual budget for each of the Trials and manage expenditure accordingly; • Apprentice under GM Agriculture to acquire the skills of practical farming: water scheduling, spray programs, fertilizer programs, spray pumps, HR etc.; • All administrative tasks related to the position. Essential qualifications, skills and experience: • BSc Agriculture (Horticulture) or relevant qualification; • 3–5 years’ experience in Agriculture, focused on horticulture production, fruit export or research; • Basic understanding of research environment with varietal evaluation; • Knowledge and experience with of horticulture and the management of irrigated crops will be advantageous.
