Calitzdorp Wine Cellar, situated on the most famous Route 62 in the Klein Karoo, has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Winemaker to act as Cellar Master but also take charge of the General Management role. This position requires a hands-on approach from a leader who can organize, plan, execute and deliver on the successes of this well-established business in its totality. The Winemaker/GM will lead a small team of cellar staff. Calitzdorp is regarded as a centre from which to partake in all that the region has to offer, including the magnificent mountain passes, Cango Caves, and exquisite fauna and flora. Calitzdorp is often referred to as the “Port capital, Fruit basket of the Klein Karoo, home of 200 species of plants found nowhere else on earth, night skies and sunsets, and gorgeous Karoo architecture”. The Winemaker/GM will be responsible for (but not limited to): *the full wine preparation process *fermentation *blending and stabilisation of wines *purchasing and ordering of barrels and other key process-driven materials *managing quality control systems *preparation for bottling *inventory management *cellar staff management *cellar administration *ensuring compliance with relevant quality standards (ISO, HACCP, BRC), accreditations/certifications (IPW, SAWIS etc.) *health & safety requirements *marketing initiatives *cellar hygiene *all other functions related to the position of General Manager whilst being responsible for the Winemaking process. Essential qualifications, skills, and experience: • Diploma/Degree in Viticulture and Oenology; • At least 5 years’ relevant winemaking experience; • Excellent computer proficiency; • Fully bilingual (Afrikaans and English); • Valid driver’s license; • Experience in similar general managerial roles will be to the candidate’s advantage; • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to work independently.
