An exciting position is available to a dedicated and hardworking Viticulturist/Maintenance Manager at Marianne Wine Estate in the beautiful Stellenbosch Wine Region.
Production Management: vineyard and citrus orchards
- Plan farming activities using budgeting techniques to achieve production targets, in close co-operation with the owner and the owner’s viticulturist
- Source required supplements to achieve production targets
- Develop and implement an annual nutrient management plan, in conjunction with the owner and according with the soil analyses reports
- Develop and implement crop control, folia management (determent by the season) and vines establishing, soil program discussed with the owner
- Manage irrigation schedule, weeds and pests to ensure optimal crops
- Liaise with key rural professionals e.g. fertilizer rep, chemical rep and contractors to ensure smooth operation of the farm
- Work within best practice environmental guidelines
- Ensure any development work is undertaken with appropriate consents
Estate Maintenance / environment
- Develop, review and manage repairs and maintenance schedule for all plant, machinery and infrastructure (buildings: guesthouse, staff houses, farm buildings)
- Design and enforce security rules and policies on the farm
- Ensure all relevant company policies are understood and adhered to
Business
- Work actively as a team member in developing and achieving Company objectives
- Work with the General Manager and/or Owner to develop the Business Plan and annual budget
- Monitor seasonal expenditure in line with the budgeted cash flow
- Supervise day-to-day activity, organize rosters and schedule tasks/activities that need to be undertaken
- Provide training/coaching to staff to enable them to competently carry out tasks required of them on farm
- Conduct an annual review of staff performance and maintain employment records
- Ensure that health and safety policies and procedures are understood and adhered to
- Review, implement and improve health and safety policies and procedures
- Ensure new staff are inducted and aware of company policies and are given role clarity
Requirements:
• 5-10 years’ experience in a similar position;
• Relevant training/qualifications in Viticulture/Farming Management;
• Skills in building, electrical and mechanical maintenance;
• Team player, open to new ideas and advice;
• Experience with IPW, WIETA certification and audits, and experience abroad would be to the candidate's advantage.
This position will report to the General Manager.
Direct Reports: General farms workers and gardeners (team of 8 – 10).
